Chelsea boosts their hope of securing a Champions League spot for the upcoming season with a well-earned victory against the newly crowned Premier League champions, Liverpool, at Stamford Bridge.
Interestingly, Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, opted for six changes to his title-winning lineup from the Tottenham Hotspur game at Anfield. Consequently, the visitors lacked some of their usual sharpness and intensity, particularly in the earlier stages of the match, which Chelsea were quick to exploit.
As a result, Chelsea took full advantage and grabbed a crucial win, propelling Enzo Maresca’s team to equal points with fourth-placed Newcastle United, whom they are set to face in a significant upcoming league fixture. The scoring began early, with Enzo Fernandez expertly guiding in a Pedro Neto cross within the opening three minutes.
Chelsea also extended their lead in the 56th minute when a dynamic run from Cole Palmer caused confusion in the Liverpool penalty area, ultimately leading to Virgil van Dijk deflecting an attempted clearance from Jarell Quansah into his own net.
Despite trailing, Liverpool did create opportunities to unsettle Chelsea, with substitutes Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah both squandering clear chances in front of their celebrating supporters.
However, it was Chelsea who had the final say in terms of goals. Although Van Dijk managed to pull one back for Liverpool with a late header five minutes from time, Cole Palmer sealed Chelsea’s victory from the penalty spot in the dying seconds, following a foul on Moises Caicedo by Quansah.
