Real Madrid ended the 2024/25 La Liga campaign with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad, as Luka Modric played his last home game for Los Blancos.

Madrid finished second behind Barcelona as Carlo Ancelotti and Lucas Vazquez also saw their final game ended with a victory.

The Bernabeu fans paid tribute before kick-off to Real Madrid’s all-time most successful player and manager, with Luka Modric (28 trophies) and Ancelotti (15) both to leave the club this summer.

The Spanish giants stayed positive, despite the league loss, as Kylian Mbappe scored in both halves to give Madrid the win.

The Frenchman, who was desperate to pip Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres to the European Golden Boot, almost got an early goal. However, his first effort was denied by the visitors’ goalkeeper, Unai Marrero.

Madrid goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin also rescued the home sides, as he denied Sergio Gomez’s one-on-one chance.

The hosts took the lead in the 38th minute when Pablo Marin erroneously gave away a penalty. Mbappe meanwhile missed from the spotkick, but got his 30th league goal of the season on the rebound.

Madrid doubled the lead in the 83rd minute, with Mbappe netting his second. Vinícius Júnior found the Frenchman, who slotted a left-footed finish inside the near post.

Mbappe now leads the race for the European Golden Boot, with Mohammed Salah as the only competitor. The Liverpool attacker will need to score three goals at least, to matchup with the Frenchman, with one game remaining.

Mbappe is also expected to win the Pichichi award as he leads with 31 goals, six ahead of Robert Lewandowski.

The last minutes were emotional, as Modric was given a guard of honour during play, after been substituted .

The final whistle brought even more tears, with Ancelotti and Lucas Vázquez also saying goodbye to Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Imanol Alguacil ended his seven-year tenure with Sociedad, while Mario Melero Lopez retired after a 10-year stint as referee.
