The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), has fortified its stance against racism, unveiling new sanctions that introduces stricter penalties.

The sanctions added into the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) is aimed at countering discriminatory behaviour, on and off the pitch.

The three-step anti-discrimination procedure was approved at the 74th FIFA Congress and has now been written into FIFA’s bylaws.

“A player may inform the referee that he has received insults, and the match will be either stopped or ended.”

“The maximum fine for a club or association will be $6M”

“If there is a repeat offence, a club may be sanctioned with matches without spectators, points deductions, or even expulsion from a tournament or relegation.”

Member associations are expected to integrate these new provisions into their rulebooks by December 31.

Meanwhile, FIFA also reserves the right to lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against decisions in cases of racist abuse. And where a Member Association fails to properly investigate incidents of racism, FIFA can intervene.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino declared, “racism is not just a problem in football; it is a crime.” This is a stark testament to FIFA’s unwavering commitment to confronting racism head-on.
