Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted their 3-2 victory over Newcastle was about resilience and mentality rather than tactics, describing the night at St James’ Park as “complete chaos” but ultimately rewarding.

Speaking to the club’s media after the final whistle and captured by Sixsports, Slot compared the atmosphere to last season’s trip to Everton, insisting the ability to withstand intensity mattered more than stylish football.

Slot told the Liverpool media this:

“It was an unbelievable atmosphere and for us to stay strong in that environment means more to me than winning 4-0 with beautiful football.” “This was not about tactics, it was about fighting for every second.”

A late winner from Trey Ngumoha saved the show for Liverpool, who also had a similar experience in their first game, where the Reds forced a 4-2 win over Bournemouth.

Here is Ngumoha’s late-winner excerpt from the Club’s X handle:

The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages when 16-year-old Trey Nyoni Ngumoha struck the winner, shortly after Newcastle had levelled at 2-2. Ngumoha has now become the youngest Liverpool player to score an EPL goal at 16 years and 361 days. Slot admitted that he delayed substitutions due to pressure from corners and set pieces, crediting his defenders for holding firm.

Slot said:

“Virgil, Ali, Ibou — they helped us survive those moments.” “Then finally we could bring on Harvey and Ngumoha, and of course it’s special that he scores. Last season we were on the wrong side of a late goal, this time we were lucky.”

Meanwhile, Slot dismissed talk of titles but underlined the importance of mentality.

“This wasn’t about football quality, except maybe the last goal. But to compete in the end you need this mentality — and tonight we showed it.”

Here is the highlight of the game between Liverpool and Newcastle last night as shared on the Reds X handle.

Liverpool will face a hard nut against Arsenal at Anfield next weekend.
