Former France and Arsenal striker, Thierry Henry has called for the return of the away goals rule, following the thrilling Champions League semi-final between Inter Milan and Barcelona.
Inter Milan dragged Barca to a 3-3 draw at the Estadio Olimpic Lluis Companys in the first leg of the semifinal.
The Catalans, being the hosts, came from behind twice to share the spoils, conceding three goals in the process.
The task started from the first minutes as the visitors took the lead through Marcus Thuram’s backheel flick.
Denzel Dumfries doubled Inter’s lead 20 minutes later, but the Blaugrana got on the scoresheet courtesy of Lamine Yamal’s magic, three minutes after.
Ferran Torres then drew Barcelona level ahead of the break, brightening up the game for the second half.
Inter retook the lead after Dumfries scored his second, before Raphinha’s powerful shot made it 3-3.
In light of the impressive effort from Inter, Henry wished the team had the advantage from their performance ahead of the second-leg at the San Siro.
“I know it’s been like that for a while, and we have to accept it,” Henry said on the removal of the away goals rule.
“But off air, I was talking to Jamie (Carragher), and I was like, how can you score three goals away from home and you don’t have an advantage?
“Away goals for me were massive. You scored three goals away and you still don’t have an advantage 0-0 at home,” Henry shrugged.
Meanwhile, UEFA took the decision to scrap the rule which gave goals scored away from home the ability to act as a tiebreaker in the case of level scorelines ahead of the 2021-22 season.
Current FIFA Chief of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger claimed during his time as Arsenal manager in 2015 that the away goals rule encouraged the team at home not to attack and that the weight of the away goal was too heavy.
With the rules scraped, the game is all squared and would be decided with any wins at the San Siro.
