Liverpool opened their Premier League campaign with a 4–2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night, in a match that combined thrilling football, emotional tributes, and an unfortunate off-field incident, Sixsports can report.
The evening began on a sombre note as the club paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota. A minute’s silence was observed, with both sets of players and supporters united in remembrance.
Following the whistle, the match quickly shifted into high gear with the hosts trying to penetrate their opponents’ back line. However, Hugo Ekitike, making his competitive debut, opened the scoring for Liverpool, seizing on a clever pass and finishing with composure. The goal came after several trials to break the visitors’ defensive wall.
Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s lead four minutes into the second half, converting from close range after sustained pressure, with Ekitike as the provider.
Meanwhile, the match was briefly halted shortly after when Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported a racist comment from the stands. The Premier League’s anti-discrimination protocols were activated, and play resumed after a pause, with the incident under investigation.
But the Cherries caught the Reds unaware, just as Slot had predicted in his pressers, scoring two quickfire goals in the second half.
Bournemouth responded strongly after, as Semenyo struck twice in quick succession, his first a sharp finish from the edge of the area and his second a well-timed run and shot past Alisson. His brace silenced the home crowd momentarily and reminded Liverpool of the Cherries’ counter-attacking threat.
With the score at 2–2 entering the final stages, Liverpool needed inspiration. Federico Chiesa provided it. The Italian forward steered home his first Premier League goal for Liverpool two minutes from time
Mohamed Salah then put the game beyond reach in stoppage time, finishing clinically after a swift break. The Egyptian’s goal ensured Liverpool collected all three points, beginning their title defence on a high note.
The African also extended his remarkable Premier League opening-day record, taking his tally to 10 goals across eight opening-day fixtures. He has the most by any player in Premier League history.
