Qatar national team have announced the signing of former Real Madrid and West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui as their new coach.
Qatar settled for the Spaniard after failing to reach an agreement with Christophe Galtier for the Qatari coaching position.
Meanwhile, in December, Luis Garcia became Qatar head coach, and he talked of his 2026 World Cup ambitions.
However, following their 3-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan in March, with hopes of reaching the tournament dented, the Spaniard was ditched.
Lopetegui, who is a free agent, having been released by West Ham, three months ago, then signed on Thursday, May 1st.
“The Qatar Football Association has officially announced the appointment of Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui as the new head coach of the Qatar national team, succeeding his fellow Spaniard Luis Garcia in this position,” the Qatari association’s statement said.
Lopetegui signed a contract until 2027, accepting the challenge to qualify Qatar for 2026 World Cup.
