Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has set another slice of Premier League history, becoming the first player to reach double figures for goals on opening days. The Liverpool forward struck in stoppage time to seal a 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield, taking his tally to 10.
The match carried deep emotion. Liverpool paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, both of whom passed away during the summer. A mosaic, banners, and a minute’s silence preceded kick-off, with Jota’s family in attendance. The atmosphere was charged before a ball was even kicked.
Liverpool had a dream start, with new signing Hugo Ekitike marking his Premier League debut with a composed finish. The former Frankfurt striker assisted the second goal, as Cody Gakpo doubled the lead before half-time.
But Bournemouth, organised and spirited, found a way back. Antoine Semenyo struck twice, the second coming after play was halted due to a serious incident of racial abuse.
The game entered its closing stages looking to end in a draw for the defending champions. However, Federico Chiesa restored Liverpool’s lead with a crisp finish.
Salah then had his moment, despite a disappointing performance, as he latched onto a through ball and slotted calmly past the keeper deep into stoppage time. The goal made it his 10th goal on the first day of a league season, a record in the competition’s history.

Salah’s consistency in these fixtures is unmatched. From his debut season in 2017-18 through to 2022-23, he scored in six consecutive openers, a run no other player has achieved.
Highlights include a debut goal at Watford, a 2020 hat-trick against Leeds, and crucial strikes against West Ham, Norwich and Fulham. Two seasons, he drew a blank against Chelsea, but his response was emphatic with a goal against Ipswich last season.
The goal took him ahead of Premier League greats Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer. He then reached double figures with the sealer against the Cherries.
For Liverpool, starting with three points in a season opener is often a good omen. For Salah, the record confirms his place as the Premier League’s ultimate season starter. A fitting start to another chapter in Salah’s remarkable career.
