Jannik Sinner continued his remarkable hard-court run at the Grand Slams with a commanding victory in his US Open opener on Tuesday. The Italian star extended his winning streak at hard-court majors to 22 matches after dismantling Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The reigning US Open champion looked sharp in his first outing since retiring from the Cincinnati final against Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month. Sinner showed no signs of rust, moving freely and dictating rallies with clean ball striking and depth that Kopriva could not match. The match, lasting just one hour and 38 minutes, underlined why the top seed remains one of the clear favourites in New York.

Sinner has now won the last three hard-court majors, lifting the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025 and triumphing in Flushing Meadows in 2024. Despite a brief medical timeout for a finger issue late in the third set, the World No. 1 contender kept his focus. He will next face either Alexei Popyrin or Emil Ruusuvuori as he continues his bid for a fifth Grand Slam title and third of the season.

Elsewhere, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti came from a set down to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, while Canada’s Denis Shapovalov advanced past Marton Fucsovics in straight sets. Alexander Bublik also progressed, ousting former champion Marin Cilic.

With both Sinner and Alcaraz in contention for the World No. 1 ranking, the race at the US Open promises to be one of the tournament’s most compelling storylines.
