On Tuesday night, the guard for Philadelphia, Tyrese Maxey, an All-Star, was awarded the league’s most improved player of the year. Maxey’s scoring increased for the third straight year, and he set career highs at the end of the regular season with averages of 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game.

Players frequently witness a sharp increase in their stats after being assigned a new job, but Maxey didn’t experience that. In 35.3 minutes a game two years ago, he averaged 17.5 points, 4.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.7 steals. He exceeded all those figures this year, averaging just 2.2 extra minutes each game.

In the voting, Maxey defeated Coby White of Chicago. Alperen Sengun of Houston came in third. White set career highs with an average of 19.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. Sengun put up career-high averages of 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.2 steals in 32.5 minutes per game.

With slightly more than half of the first-place votes cast, Maxey narrowly defeated White. Five points were awarded to players who voted in first place, three for runners-up, and one for third. Maxey received 319 points to White’s 305 at the end, however Maxey received 79 ballot appearances while White received 91.
